During their exploration of the Upper Missouri in the early 1800s, the Mandan were one of the principle tribes visited by Lewis and Clark. The illustrations of Karl Bodmer and George Catlin portrayed the Mandan as a more exotic tribe in their dress and hairstyles than tribes that were photographed some 60 years later, after the Civil War.
