Zuni Pottery
The Zuni Pueblo is the most remote pueblo in New Mexico, located 40 miles south of Gallup, New Mexico and 100+ miles from the pueblos clustered along the Rio Grande river. This relative isolation ensured that pottery made at Zuni had a unique design aesthetic, unlike pottery made at any other pueblo. Traditionally, the Zuni were known for pottery with lively geometric patterns, bird motifs, and three-dimensional pottery figurines, especially owls. Contemporary Zuni potters have expanded from this pottery-making heritage, creating even more intricate designs, three-dimensional figures, and pottery with 3D relief elements.
