Edgar Samuel Paxson (1852-1919) - Native Portrait with Peace Medal

15.625" x 13.5" framed. Ex Arizona collection. Originally from an old Montana family collection of three generations. The owner inherited this piece from his mother who was born in Montana in 1917. His mother’s father was Frederick Edward Bullock, who was an engineer in Montana. Other members of the family included the mayor, doctor, and madame of the local brothel. Aunt Ruth was the madame and sister of Nanny Stephens. Nanny is the great-great-grandmother of the current owner. There is a note written on verso in the current owner’s hand which reads ‘Belonged to Nanny Stephens, brought from Montana.’ The owner’s mother’s mother died of heart damage from rheumatic fever.
