Charcoal and Ink on paper. History: April 22,1906 after the San Francisco earthquake and fire where Dixon had to flee his home and studio he wrote to Charles Lummis in Los Angeles, CA and said that they would be coming to California as soon as we can get transportation to get down there. Dixon ask if he could stay with Lummis for a few days till he can get a newspaper job. Around May 20th 1906, Dixon went to Rancho Santa Anita to see Mr. Lucky Baldwin and watch the horses race. Cruzados caught his eye and was one of Mr. Baldwins favorite horses, Cruzados won many races for Baldwin all over the state of California. Cruzados was bred by Mr. Baldwin in 1899 (Sired by Emperor of Norfolk and Atalanta 11 (both were bred by Theodore Winters) who was a very famous horse breeder. Cruzados pedigree is very well documented. Maynard Dixon did the portrait of Mr. Lucky Baldwin d.1906 and Cruzados at the same time. The Historical Society of Arcadia next to Santa Anita Race Track has the Portrait of Mr. Baldwin.
