Susan Kliewer - Maynard Dixon: At Last I Shall Give Myself to the Desert Again

"In the summer of 1900, Maynard Dixon journeyed into the Southwest from his native California, traveling 'Eastward to see the West.'

Faced with the new trends of modern art around 1915, Maynard went into the desert seeking answers. Said Dixon:

Here I was in the midst of the Real Thing - my Western world - and my mind was set to tell the truth of it on paper and canvas.

The rest of his lifetime was devoted to sketching and painting the remote western regions of the country."
