DETAILS
This blanket was presented to George Herbert Harries (1860-1934) by Ogalala Lakota (Sioux) Chief Luther Standing Bear (1868-1939) to acknowledge Harries work on behalf of his tribe. In 1891, President appointed Harries a member of the Sioux Commission to resolve the disputed boundaries between the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations in South Dakota. Harries had a distinguished career as a journalist and editor with the Washington D.C. Evening Star, became commander of the Washington D.C., National Guard, and served in the Spanish-American War and in WWI as a Major General. This weaving has remained in the family and was inherited by the owner.
